Walking in Cumbria

Walking in Cumbria
Talk about Cumbria and you can't help thinking about the Lake District. Think about the Lake District and the name that springs to mind is Alfred Wainwright, whose Guide to the Lakeland Fells has inspired a generation of walkers in Cumbria.

And if you want a walking holiday, nowhere in the country offers more variety - or more challenging walks - than Cumbria. But that doesn't mean it's only for the 'serious' walker. From the stunning beauty of the coast to the challenge of the Lake District to the history of Hadrian's Wall, Cumbria offers something for everyone - and something for the whole family. A personal recommendation is to rent a holiday cottage in Cumbria with a company such as Rent My Cottage.

Let's start on the coast, and where better than Egremont, the nearest town to what was voted 'Britain's favourite view' - Great Gable at the head of the Wasdale Valley. Like so many places in Cumbria, Egremont offers a variety of walks, so that every walker can find something to suit them. Around Egremont, it might be the beauty of the Riverside walk to Lowmill, or the Biggrigg Circular Walk - slightly longer and more challenging.

Along the coast there a variety of walks around Maryport - including one alongside Hadrian's Wall. More of that later!

Of course, it's the Lake District that draws that most walkers to Cumbria - what does Alfred Wainwright recommend? 'Haystacks' was reportedly his favourite Lakeland fell, and the walk from Honister Pass is excellent - you really get the feel of the Lakeland Mountains, without too much of the effort! You'll also see some interesting industrial archaeology as you pass the old slate quarries in the area. So many of Cumbria's walks take in the county's industrial heritage - it's not strictly a walk, but I'll never forget taking my children down the lead mine at Nenthead.

But walking in Cumbria isn't just about the coast or the Lake District - as you come inland, there are stunning walks along the side of Hadrian's Wall. And don't forget to visit the Roman Fort at Birdoswald: have the children conscripted into the legions for the day!

Wherever you're walking in Cumbria, you'll need somewhere to stay, and the variety of holiday cottages in the county is stunning. You can be gazing out to sea, watching the sunset over the Solway Firth, you can be away from it all in the Lake District - or you can be fifteen minutes from centre of Carlisle. Wherever you are, put your feet up and relax - and rest assured that Cumbria will serve up another perfect walk tomorrow.
